The Fiji Women’s Crisis Center has condemned the comments of letter writer, Sukha Singh from Labasa in the Sunday Times.

FWCC Coordinator, Shamima Ali says the comments are misogynistic, body shaming women and sexist.

In the letter, Singh has made a comment regarding Assistant Ministry for Foreign Affairs Lenora Qereqeretabua’s weight and asking her to start training.

Ali says it is also the height of irresponsibility and shame that The Fiji Times made the decision to publish this especially during 16 Days of Activism against violence against women and girls.

According to Ali sexist language is part of the patriarchal system and a culture of misogyny that harms women.

She adds if, as a society, we accept and allow sexist language, we’re sending a message that it’s OK to demean women.

Ali says this is not acceptable, and The Fiji Times must do better, and the media must call it out and hold each other accountable.
