Prominent Suva lawyer Barbara Malimali has been appointed as the temporary chair of the Fijian Electoral Commission.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka made this announcement yesterday.
The PM says this is a temporary appointment and Malimali will continue until a substantive appointment is made.
Former FijiFirst candidate Reginald Jokhan has also been named as a member of the commission.
Rabuka says the COC has received nominations for the remaining seats in the Electoral Commission, which will be approved by President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere.
He says once the Electoral Commission has a quorum, one of the first orders of business will be to decide on the two vacant seats of the FijiFirst party in Parliament
“They will have six after the nominations are considered by the president, they will have a quorum. So a chair and six, so four can sit.”
Following the recent resignation of Electoral Commission chair Mukesh Nand, the Commission is left with one other member, Ateca Ledua.
Rabuka says the COC has set a deadline of seven days for submitting nominations for the substantive Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, with the final decision to be made on July 28th.
They also tasked the Secretary of the Commission with drafting standard operating procedures to address past disconnects and ensure smoother operations.
