Papua New Guinea’s former attorney-general Kerenga Kua says the involvement of Australians in high-level money laundering in PNG needs to be investigated by Australian authorities.
This follows sensational allegations of money-laundering in a secretly-filmed video aired by Australian broadcaster SBS last week.
In the segment lawyers in both Australia and PNG discuss how to collude with political leaders in PNG to shift stolen money into Australian bank accounts and real estate.
Mr Kua says such collusion has been suspected for some time but that evidence is not always accessible.
“The allegations need to be very seriously investigated because there’s a significant number of Australian lawyers in Papua New Guinea as residents and on a fly-in-fly-out basis, on a daily basis, every week, every month, every year. They do a significant volume of work in Papua New Guinea.”
