Youngsters impress in Chess championship

The future of the sport of Chess in the country looks bright as youngsters continue to impress in the local scene.

Young Phillip Sukhu of Saint Marcellin Primary School raised eyebrows as he finished 4th overall in the Vinod Patel & Company Limited Chess Championship with an impressive score of 4/5.

The year 7 student dropped only one game, and also won the Best Upset Award for registering wins over Women’s Candidate Master Gloria Sukhu and former tational rep Tanvi Prasad.

The event was won by in-form Candidate Master Manoj Kumar who had 5/5, while Prashant Sarup and Goru Arvind finished second and third respectively with 4.5/5.

Tanvi Prasad of Deenbandhoo Primary School and Gloria Sukhu finished first and second in the Women’s Division with an equal score of 3/5 while Makayla Sukhu of Gospel Primary School came third with 2/5.

In the Secondary School’s Division, upcoming player Austin Koroi of Gospel High School came first with 3.5/5.

 

Andrew Sukhu of Saint Marcellin Primary School won the Primary School’s Division with 3/5 and Rashmika Perera of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Primary School and Sandeu Amarasinghe finished second and third with equivalent scores of 2.5/5.

Fiji Chess Federation also acknowledged the performance of Aeesha Sharma who registered 2 wins in her first-ever chess championship by giving her the Best Beginner’s Award.
