Tokovou faces Slater in eliminations

Local surfer, Isei Tokovou will face his mentor and 11 time world surfing champ, Kelly Slater in the elimination stages of the Volcom Fiji Pro in Tavarua today.

Tokovou was placed in a tough heat against current ASP World Tour leader, Joel Parkinson of Australia, who picked the best waves in his heat to advance to round three.

Second wildcard, Mitch Coleborn of Australia caused an upset after beating USA’s Slater, in what was a non-elimination heat.

French surfer, Jeremy Flores scored the highest single wave score of 9.83 on Day One and also earned the highest heat total of the day 17.37 out of 20.

While Coleborn progresses, Slater advances to the elimination Round 2 where he will face local trials winner, Tokovou.

Other Round three competitors include South African, Jordy Smith, Adriano De Souza of Brazil and current ASP World No. 4.

Hawaii’s John John Florence, known as one of the youngest best tube riders in the world was also in top form.
