Tavite Veredamu was the hero for France after he scored the winning try as they beat Fiji 29-24 in extra time.

The win means France finished third in Cape Town and taking the 17 points on offer.

Jean Barraque scored from a scrum set piece and exposed the Fijian defense before France struck again with two successive tries as they led 17-0.

France starved Fiji of possession in the first half but Kavekini Tabu managed to break the well-organized French defense before finding Jerry Tuwai just a meter out from the try line as he was caught short.

The French-led Fiji 17-5 at half-time.

But they exposed Fiji at the kick-offs on a number of occasions in the match and resulted in their fourth try.

Tavite Veredamu was sent off for France for a professional foul and seconds later Sevuloni Mocenacagi went through for Fiji’s second try.

A France mistake saw Mocenacagi strolling in for his second try as Fiji trail 19-24

Kavekini Tabu scored on the stroke of full-time but Waisea Nacuqu failed to nail the conversion to take the game into extra time before Veredamu scored the winner in extra time.

Fiji failed to defend their Cape Town 7s title after being outclassed by a smart New Zealand side 24-7 in the semifinal.

Meli Derenalagi and Paula Dranisinukula copped yellow cards in that match which meant Fiji now has 12 in ten games, the most by any team in the World Series this season just after two tournaments.

In the quarterfinal, Fiji defeated Ireland 31-12.

Fiji’s fourth-place finish in Cape Town earned them 15 points which means they are now sixth on the overall standings with 23 points just one point behind the fifth-placed team England.

New Zealand, South Africa, France and Argentina make up the top four on the World Series standings at the moment.

The next tournament will be held in Hamilton, New Zealand on the 25th and 26th of next month.
