Mazey welcomes the new budget for Sports

Fiji Sports Commission Chairperson, Peter Mazey, says they are happy with an allocation of $24.1 million to the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

The Sports Commission gets $1 million for the development of the Fijians sports from the beginner to the elite level by sporting national bodies.

Mazey says it’s good to see the government allocating $2 million to the development of rural complexes.

“One thing is that more money is going to the sport development in the rural and urban areas so it’s not just you know playing for and elite teams to go overseas it for our youth to develop them in the sport you want to play.”

The government has also allocated $4 million for overseas sports tournaments which include the Sevens Rugby World Cup, Netball World Cup, Youth Olympic Games and the Pacific Games next year.

They have also set aside more than $3 million for hosting of the international tournaments such as the Cricket ICC East Aisa Pacific Sub-Regional World T20 qualifier, IWF World Junior Championship and International rugby matches.
