The Fiji National Rugby League says it is a great opportunity for local players to get overseas contracts when the Melanesian Club Championship takes place in October.

FNRL Board Member Tomi Finau says this is an initiative by the rugby league bodies of Fiji and Papua New Guinea to intensify the local competitions.

“FNRL has always tried to look at ways to lift the competition in Fiji. Something similar to what we have overseas. It’s all to try and build our players for the next World Cup. One thing we did was the introduction of the Top 8 competition and now we have the Melanesian Championship.”
