FRU to establish Women’s High Performance Unit

The Fiji Rugby Union will soon establish a High Performance Unit for women with the assistance of World Rugby.

FRU Chief Executive John O’Connor says they are serious about women’s rugby in the country.

When asked by FBC Sports about the threat of women’s rugby league in Fiji as some Fijiana 7s reps have switched, O’Connor says they’ll soon draw up contracts for players.

‘I know we are doing a lot of work behind the scenes for women’s rugby grateful that world rugby is now supporting high performance for women’s rugby we looking at immediately contracting the girls in the extended squad’.

Women’s fifteens rugby is also a priority for the FRU.

O’Connor says the FRU will establish a High Performance Unit for women’s rugby.

‘Also we are fully supporting the Fijiana 15s who are preparing for the Oceania trying to qualify for the 2021 world cup in New Zealand so huge few years for women’s rugby and with world rugby support and the establishment of HPU for women I know if we prepare well we’ll do wonders in the world cup and Olympics’.

Women’s rugby certainly have a brighter future in the country as World Rugby is advocating for an equal playing field initiative.
