March 5, 2019 2:10 pm

Work on sealing and rehabilitating the Siberia Road in Labasa is ongoing.

Expected to be completed by the end of this month, the 1.4km road is being used by hundreds of people daily.

The sealing of the road will directly benefit the hospital, a hotel, a pre-school, home for the elderly, a school for children with disabilities and some settlements.

Funded by the government, the project will cost around $1.7 million.

Meanwhile, the Fiji Roads Authority will also be looking at raising a portion of the Siberia road along Emily Flats.

Emily Flats is prone to flooding during heavy downpour.

FRA chief executive Johnathan Moore says the Emily Flats retains more water when compared to other areas in Labasa because there is no proper drainage.

Visiting the site with Infrastructure Minister Jone Usamte last week, Moore says when water is retained and drains get flooded, its takes apart the road structure.

He says raising the road at least by a meter will help reduce flooding in the area.
