Women need to take more leadership roles: Kumar

Women need to take more leadership roles in all areas including both at work and at home.

During the Fiji Institute of Accountants Women in Leadership Inaugural event today, Minister for Trade Premila Kumar says women are slowly making their way to managerial positions which is something positive.

“I personally believe that we must celebrate there is realization, that there is gender disparity, and every effort is being made by all stakeholders to promote women as leaders. It is seen in various government policies, private sector initiatives and civil society actions, so everyone is working towards that.”

The Minister says it’s positive to see an increase in women’s participation in the Fiji Institute of Accounts financial board.

“I am pleased to inform you that the number has increased to 38%, this is a growth of approximately 1% per annum, over the past 24 years. Slowly but surely, women participation has increased which is why it is important to celebrate women in leadership.”

Fiji Institute of Accountants President, Zarin Khan says they very much support women taking up leadership roles.

“FIA recognizes the need for more women in leadership in all fields. The FIA women and leadership series will focus on identifying issues facing women’s advancement in accounting, finance and leadership roles.”

Meanwhile, Fiji celebrates International Women’s Day on Friday.
