More than twenty people with albinism gathered at Sukuna Park in Suva today to celebrate International Albinism Awareness Day.

Speaking at the event, Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says people with albinism must be recognized as they have the potential to do great things like anyone else.

“There are people in our society that maybe different from us, they make look different from us but we need to see them as our fellow human beings, we need to see the specific needs they have and how we can facilitate that.”

Sayed-Khaiyum says there has been discrimination against people with albinism and such awareness create the ability for people to understand and humanize our fellow Fijians instead of making fun of them.

Student with albinism, Sabina Moce says that she hopes people will treat her the same as others.
