Uncle cops jail term for rape

A 51-year-old man has been sentenced to 7-years imprisonment for raping his 19-year-old niece.

The father of three committed the offence in June 2011.

The Lautoka High Court heard that the accused picked up the victim from Sigatoka Town in the evening and took her to a motel, where he raped her.

The victim informed her mother about the incident the next day, which was then reported to the police.

A permanent domestic violence restraining order against the accused person has also been issued.

Uncle cops jail term for rape

A 28-year-old man has been sentenced to 12-years 11 months imprisonment after he was found guilty of one count of rape.

He allegedly raped his 4-year-old niece in May last year.

The court also heard that the perpetrator was previously convicted by the Magistrates Court – for two counts of indecent assault on two young children.

The Magistrate had sentenced him to 40 months imprisonment with a non-parole of 34 months.

The Court was told that he committed this offence while on bail.

Judge Justice Priyantha Fernando in sentencing Naduva said it is the duty of the court to protect small children from being sexually exploited, by imposing adequate and deterrent punishment.

The perpetrator has a non-parole period of 11 years.

A permanent Domestic Violence Restraining Order has also been issued against him.
