Two more drownings in the first week of school holidays

Another two families are today mourning the loss of their loved ones following two separate drownings yesterday.

A seven-year-old girl was found floating in a nearby river by her mother in Muanaira, Vutia, Rewa at around 5pm.

The deceased was playing outside while her mother attended to another sibling, and she was later found floating in a nearby river.

In the second incident a 13-year-old student of Lami was found near the Veisari Bridge in Lami after she had jumped off the bridge but did not surface.

She was swimming with her cousins at around 5pm when the incident occurred.

The drowning toll stands at 20 compared to 33 for the same period last year.

Four children have now drowned in the first week of the school holidays. Two boys died while swimming in a river in Sigatoka over the weekend.
