Three men cop prison terms for robbing a couple

Three men who robbed a family of more than $93,000 in Sigatoka three years ago have been handed down harsh prison sentences by the Lautoka High court.

Kelepi Salauca, Vereti Waqa and Tui Lesi Bula were convicted of one count each of aggravated robbery.

27-year-old Salauca, a graphic designer by profession has been sentenced to 10-years 11 months and seven days imprisonment with a non-parole period of 9-years.

27-year-old Waqa a welder was sentenced to 13-years 9 months and 27 days imprisonment with non-parole period of 12-years while 42-year-old Bula was sentenced to 12-years 2 months and 21 days imprisonment with non-parole period of 11-years.

The court heard that the three entered the home of the victim on 11th October 2015 at around 2am.

The victim and his pregnant wife were woken up by the sound of someone breaking into their bedroom.

The victim was threatened as to the whereabouts of their valuables in the house.

The court also heard that the pregnant wife of the complainant was grabbed by the hair and dragged from one room to another so that she could show them where the valuables were kept.

High court Judge Justice Sunil Sharma said that all the accused persons have committed a very serious offence as a group.

Justice Sharma adds that all of them should learn to work and live off their earnings rather than being a parasite, robbing others for personal gains.
