There is a need to talk about reproductive health: Akbar

Fijians need to break away from the barriers of taboo and develop a conversational culture on reproductive health.

This was highlighted by Health Minister Rosy Akbar who says too often Fijians are concerned with the society’s opinion instead of opting for medical assistance when needed.

Akbar also says we need to ensure that all Fijians achieve safe sexual relationships free from violence and ill-treatment.

She adds people need to have the freedom to decide if, when and how often to reproduce without any unacceptable consequences.

“For many years I think this is a Taboo subject because of the strong cultural values we have, parents don’t want to talk openly to their children and most of the time they leave it to teachers.”

Akbar says everyone needs to be on board when talking about reproductive health in order to have positive discussions and dialogues.
