Fiji’s High Level Climate Champion, Inia Seruiratu

Fiji’s High Level Climate Champion, Inia Seruiratu says there is no single solution to de-carbonizing the shipping sector.

Seruiratu says without targeted action, greenhouse gas emissions from maritime transport will continue to grow.

He says an operational change is needed – which includes alternative fuels, technological advances and the right policy environment.

Speaking at the COP24 Marrakech Partnership on Oceans, Coastal Zones and Transport, Seruiratu highlighted on the urgent need to cut down on gas emissions.

He stresses that even the Ports are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

We have witnessed this first hand in the Pacific when category 5 Cyclone Winston made landfall in Fiji in 2016 – a number of our Ports and Wharf’s were severely damaged and rendered unusable. This had a drastic impact on the lives of our local communities and businesses especially those in the outer island who depend on this infrastructure to receive and access necessary supplies and facilities.

The Marrakech Partnership events at COP 24 aims to strengthen the collaboration for greater pre-2020 mitigation and adaptation actions and to identify specific policy options and solutions that assist Parties.
