Suva water network gets $67m grant

Fiji is one of only eight countries in the world and the only Pacific Island state to have successfully made a submission to the global Green Climate Fund securing $67 million.

According to the Foreign Affairs Minister Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, more than a third of the country’s population will benefit from this grant with the money to be spent on the Suva Water network.

“These funds will be used through the Asian Development Bank to refurbish the Suva Water Supply, the water system will be climate proofed through a number of measures including strengthening pipes to make them more resilient to flooding and by providing alternative sources of water to the greater Suva area.”

Under the grant, more than 95 percent of the population will have access to safe drinking water in the greater Suva area by 2025 and an estimated 60 percent of the population will have proper sewerage facilities by 2030.
