Border security at the Nadi International Airport has been upgraded with the installment of a Rapiscan X-Ray Machine.
Gifted by the Israelie government, the machine will be able to scan luggage for explosives and illicit drugs.
Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority CEO Visvanath Das says this a direct response to the ongoing challenges at the border.
“Fiji has been termed as the hub of the Pacific, unfornately because of our strategic location in the Pacific and the greater Asia Pacific region, Fiji has also been used as a transient place for illegal and dangerous drugs as well as other illicit items and substances.”
Israel’s Ambassador to Fiji Tibor Schlosser says global terrorism is an issue for every country and this assistance of been able to scan luggage for incidious material is practical measure in dealing with the threat.
The x-ray machine will be used by the Bioscurity Authority of Fiji and FRCA and will be based at the International Arrivals section.
