It has been two days since a car with four passengers believed to be inside is submerged in the Rewa River in Nausori.

Police divers halted operation around mid-day yesterday due to the unfavorable weather conditions and strong currents.

17-year-old, Tasleem Ali is believed to be one of the passengers in the car.

Speaking to FBC News, Ali’s brother Aiyub Khan says the agonizing wait to retrieve his brother from the raging Rewa River is crippling his family.

“When I heard about this, I called my mum, she was in hospital, she said no, you call him again and check where he was. She couldn’t believe it, actually our dad just passed 8 months ago and my mum hasn’t recovered yet and now this thing has come again. He was going to turn 18 this year and we are just hoping that his body is found, at least we could see him for just one last time.”

Living near the accident area in Kasavu, Navitalai Rokotuitai says they were about to have tea on Wednesday morning when they heard a loud noise from the road.

However, when they went out to see what the commotion was, all they could see was tyre tracks through a cassava patch with no sign of a vehicle.

It’s believed the car was traveling towards Nausori and tried to overtake another vehicle, but the driver apparently lost control, veered off the road and ended up in the river.

Police divers are expected to resume their search and retrieve operation if the weather clears.
