Say 'No' plastic straws

Students around the country are being urged to say No to using plastic straws.

The ‘No Straw’ pledge is a national commitment that is focusing on beating plastic pollution.

Straws are one of the top ten plastic debris found during coastal clean-up.

They are often ingested by marine animals and do not decompose easily.

Minister for Environment Praveen Kumar says we must refuse to use plastic straws at all times.

Kumar says this can be done by ensuring that whenever we are ordering drinks from restaurants and retail outlets, we can politely request for a ‘no straw’ serve.

The ‘No Straw’ pledge for the Northern Division was launched in Labasa yesterday, with the Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere the first to take the pledge, followed by Commissioner Northern Jovesa Vocea.

Teachers and students from around Vanua Levu also signed up.
