Sale of fireworks to be monitored

Officers from the Mineral Resource Department and Ministry of Industry and Trade will be out in all divisions from next week to inspect and monitor the sale of fireworks.

Acting Permanent Secretary, Malaki Nalawa confirms the inspection and the monitoring will be completed after the Diwali Day and will commence prior to the New Year celebration.

Nalawa says roman candles, cakes that are less than 2kg in weight and all that are grouped as firecrackers are banned.

He says people can still use fireworks from 5pm to 10pm and on the day of Diwali people can use fireworks from 5pm up till mid night.

He says people who do not abide by the time can face a penalty of $400 or face 6 months imprisonment.

Diwali will be celebrated next Thursday
