Serious concerns have been raised by the Fiji Roads Authority on the disregard of weight limits on bridges which is jeopardizing hundreds of Fijian lives.

Chief Executive Officer, Jonathan Moore, says specific weight restrictions have been put in place for certain bridges, because they’re deteriorating.

Moore highlighted a particular bridge at Vesidrua in Vanua Levu which is in a bad condition.

Vesidrua Bridge, the only access linking people that travel to and from Labasa, Savusavu and Nabouwalu in Vanua Levu has been reinforced.

The single-lane wooden bridge is located along the Labasa/Nabouwalu Highway, 10km away from Seaqaqa Town.

Moore says there is a serious risk that these bridges could be further damaged, or even collapse – if overloading continues.

The Authority adds that individuals and organizations should realize they’re not only putting lives at risk but also putting the entire economy at stake by continuing to overstress the infrastructure.

He says deteriorated bridges have been located in 16 locations and are due for complete replacement over the next 18 months, therefore it’s vital that load control is observed.

The FRA says if overloading continues – bridges could be damaged beyond repair or use – which would mean closure.
