Rewa river nears critical level

April 1, 2012 7:32 am

Commissioner Central – Lieutenent Bale Tuitubou says residents along the Rewa delta need to seek higher ground.

Waters are reaching critical levels and he says although the rain has stopped in Nausori, they fear continuous heavy rain from the highlands will play be a factor later tonight.

“Water is still rising – the critical level is 4.5m and we are now at 4.43m since 4pm and we can see it is still rising. It has stopped raining in Nausori but reports from the Naitasiri Highlands is there’s still heavy rain. We have advised all those near the area to seek higher grounds. There are six evacuation centres activated. Three in Nausori, one in Tailevu and Rewa. We are also reminding people not to be complacent.”
