Rebuilt schools now have cyclone certification

April 3, 2019 7:31 am

The government’s Construction Implementation Unit was initially given 166 schools to rebuild after being devastated by TC Winston in 2016.

Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says of this 143 have been completed and the remaining schools are expected to be completed by July this year.

Sayed-Khaiyum says the government funded most of the schools on their own and the unit was completely responsible for the rebuild.

He adds schools that have been rebuilt by the unit, now have cyclone certification.

“We have actually given a cyclone certification. The individual school management can actually go out and get cyclone insurance so when the honorable Prime Minister goes to a certain school apart from handing over the key he gives the cyclone certification for that particular building.”

Sayed-Khaiyum says the government has now engaged in capital projects database.

He says these projects will help in future budgetary provisions and periodic maintenance.
