Private sector told to highlight challenges

July 11, 2016 5:56 pm

One of the main issues that the Pacific Islands Private sector organization faces is connecting the private sector to markets as these countries don’t have access to readily available markets.

This was highlighted by Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum at the 2016 Pacific Islands Private Sector Organization (PIPSO) Annual General Meeting in Nadi yesterday.

Private sectors around the Pacific have been encouraged to bring to light challenges they face in trying to access markets around the region and the world.

“We always have to recognize what are the limitations we have in the pacific to be able to then find the solutions. When highlighting the challenges it doesn’t mean that there are no opportunities but i think it’s critical to understand where we’re coming from. Therefore it’s critical for us to be able to learn to collaborate with each other because we don’t have the economies of scale.”

Sayed-Khaiyum says all governments should look at alternative ways to provide opportunities without compromising the standards required of them.

He adds that with limited resources, private sectors must be able to identify their niche product.

Sayed Khaiyum says the Fijian government stands ready and willing to assist neighboring countries to tap into the Fijian markets.
