President makes powerful national address

October 9, 2015 8:49 pm

Today, the 10th of October is Fiji’s Independence Day and marks 45 years since being declared an Island State in 1970.

In his Presidential address to the nation yesterday, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau said Fiji has received international recognition in a number of areas such as raising awareness about the effects of climate change and our peace keepers serving overseas.

Ratu Epeli says on this occasion of celebrating Fiji Day, it is also important to recognize our nations’ flaws and weaknesses and re-dedicate ourselves to rectifying them.

He has also called on all Fijians to address and curb serious problems like rape, suicide, domestic violence and corruption.

“All this is blight on our nation’s reputation that we must simply confront. We must put an end to the hypocrisy of a society that professes to be religious yet turns a blind eye to too many instances of ungodly behaviour.”

Ratu Epeli’s term in office ends next month.
