There is mixed reaction from political parties on the decision of the High Court yesterday afternoon.

Fiji Labour Party Leader Mahendra Chaudhry says, their candidate Steven Singh has been deprived of his right to contest the elections.

“We will consult with our lawyers to see what further cause we have on this matter but it’s just injustice, that’s all i can say at this stage.”

The People’s Democratic Party President Lynda Tabuya says there is nothing much that can be done now.

“The turn of events today, on the grand scale of things is not very surprising but still very disappointing as you would expect the law and justice to take it’s course. But its very clear today that this is something that’s beyond us and we just need to keep going on.”

However, FijiFirst General Secretary Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says they knew the decision made by the Supervisor of elections was correct.

“We believe that in law the Supervisor of Elections was correct. That obviously has been vindicated by the court today (yesterday). It is a pity that the Electoral Commission sought to go overseas to get legal opinion. They could have legal opinion from the Solicitor General. And again we have to see in what context it was given in and when did they actually go and get the legal opinion. Did they go and get the legal opinion after 4pm or did they get it on Tuesday because they knew they will exceed three days. These are the things were need to ask.”

Had the High Court ruled in favour of the Electoral Commission, FijiFirst candidate Parveen Kumar would have been removed as a candidate and Steven Singh of the FLP would have been included in the final list.
