February 13, 2016 8:00 pm

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has congratulated his Vanuatu counterpart Charlot Salwai Tabimasmas on the election of his new government.

In his message Bainimarama says his appointment has come at a challenging period in Vanuatu’s history.

He says Vanuatu and Fiji have a long and unique bilateral relationship and we have worked together closely on many areas of common interest both at sub-regional and regional level.

Bainimarama says he looks forward to continuing this and taking the relations further for the mutual benefit of the people of both countries.

Tabimasmas, who was elected on Thursday after Vanuatu’s legislature was dismantled in late 2015, is the country’s 11th Prime Minister.

He received more than 40 votes from the 52 Members of Parliament.
