June 16, 2018 12:11 am

One hundred and twelve cases of aggravated burglary cases were filed in the high courts in Suva, Labasa and Lautoka in the last five months.

Suva High court Judge Justice Daniel Goundar highlighted the figures yesterday while sentencing a 34-year-old man to two years imprisonment who pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary.

Justice Goundar says between January and May, 68 cases of aggravated burglary was filed in the Central division, 24 in the West and three in the North.

The High court Judge revealed the figure is the second highest in the list of offences that have been filed.

Justice Goundar also revealed that according to the court statistics last year, 186 cases of aggravated burglary were filed in the High court throughout the country.

The High court Judge highlighted the more prevalent an offence is, the greater the need is for deterrence and the need to protect the community.
