New Secretary General to parliament appointed

The government has announced the appointments of a new Secretary General and a deputy SG to Parliament.

Viniana Namosimalua now takes up the new and important post of Secretary General to Parliament.

Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum made the announcement this afternoon.

Under the 2013 Constitution, the Secretary General to parliament is given complete independence and so Mrs Namosimalua’s appointment is effective from today.

Namosimalua – who was the Secretary to Cabinet is looking forward to taking up the challenge.

I’m ready to take it on. I know that it will be a challenege but i’m ready – knowing that this institution will inspire in the lives of Fijians – transparency and accountability. What the members will do in Parliament will help the people of Fiji to value that. To value democracy and the value of it, of transparency and accountability.

The Deputy Secretary to Parliament is Mary Qiliaso.

Namosimalua and Qaliso, will be responsible for all functions of Parliament.

Meanwhile, the Attorney General also announced that the Standing Orders for Parliament have been gazetted today.

The Standing Orders are the ruled for the order and conduct of business and proceedings in Parliament and its committees.
