New rule against bail offenders

April 16, 2012 5:20 am

Breaching bail conditions will now be an offence.

This after the government rectified the loophole in laws governing bail offences.

Under the Bail (Amendment) Decree, any breach of bail condition imposed by the Courts will now also be an offence punishable under law.

The law previously only covered offenses in which a person on bail fled or failed to surrender themselves.

The penalty for breaching conditions of bail will now be the same as it is for absconding or failing to surrender to custody, which is a fine of $2,000 or 12 months in prison, or both.
