New evacuation site for Semo villagers

March 30, 2012 4:20 am

Semo Village in Sigatoka has been hit hard by flood waters and most of the houses have been destroyed.

FBC Operations team member Jamie Toro, who is amongst those stranded on the Queens Highway, says the flooding has caused much devastation.

“Only two from the 60 houses at Semo are not underwater. We also went down to the access road before Natadola the first bridge is underwater. There is an FNPF nursery that’s located there and it is fully submerged. There are also 20ft containers floating around. We tried to go back to Nadi but flood waters have reached Korovuto village.”

“Just after the humps at Korovuto village the water has reached up to that point. With rain continuing we may have to wait until the early hours of the morning and there is a landslide in Yadua which will take about 6 hours to clear.”

“Right now the villagers from Semo are being evacuated to Nabau Community hall.”

Two houses have been washed away with the Tuva Indian Primary school becoming the latest evacuation site for Semo villagers.
