Stay off the coast and avoid diving: NDMO

Villages close to Mount Washington in Kadavu has been advised to refrain from diving on their fishing grounds.

The National Disaster Management Office has also advised villagers to avoid movement along Mount Washington as they have received reports of some explosion activity underwater.

Villages including Nabukelevu I Ra, Lomati, Talaulia and the nearby villages are advised to exercise caution.

The NDMO is advising people to stay away from all landslides that have occurred in the last few days including the Mt Washington vicinity.

Continuous tremors or future eruption may make these areas even more hazardous.

The NDMO is also urging divers to avoid going out to sea during this time while assessments are still being undertaken.

Kadavu was hit by a 5.7 magnitude earthquake on Sunday which was felt as far as Nadi and Suva.

The public are advised to remain on alert and ensure that any slight damage to their houses is monitored as this may present a high risk if any future movement occurs.

In case of landslides, the public is advised to first contact the Mineral Resources Department on 338 1611 or the NDMO on 3319 250 before any steps are taken to clear the slip.
