The Ministry of Health has activated a Multi-agency Taskforce Group to stop the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome from entering our ports of entry.
This was stated by the Minister for Health Jone Usamate as they now have a response plan that is already in place.
Usamate says although the risk of the MERS virus entering the country is very low, the Ministry of Health has raised concern on the direct flight from Korea to Fiji.
“This agency is now active and they are also looking into these particular issue so we are working together with other bodies like the World Health Organization, we know also that places like Korea they have very stringent measures.”
He says they are not taking it lightly as there is a high possibility of the virus entering our shores.
Meanwhile, about 140 people have been infected in Korea since the start of the outbreak last month – fourteen are known to have died.
