Landowners can expect more returns from gravel extraction on their land in the future following a proposal that was made by the Mineral’s department to the Lands Ministry.

Permanent Secretary, Malakai Finau says the proposal aims to increase the current rate for gravel extraction of fifty cents per cubic meter.

While making a submission to the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee today, Finau said they will review the payment aiming for an increase in the royalty to landowners.

“For us or for gravel extraction its $2.18 at the moment and it’s the sum we receive from extractors and for that government retains $1.50 and fifty cents is the royalty paid to qoliqoli owners.”

The Ministry says the current payment hasn’t been review for a few years now hence, an increment in royalty is necessary.

Finau says its important landowners receive the payment they deserve.
