Military celebrates Infantry Day

The Fiji Military Forces celebrated Infantry Day today at Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Nabua, Suva.

Land Force Commander Colonel Sitiveni Qiliho says Infantry Day recognizes the role and sacrifices of the infanteer/ infantryman- the foot soldiers at the tip of the spear.

“The celebrations of this year’s Infantry Day started last Friday where the 3rd Battalion as the Infantry Unit of the Land Forces now went out and did community projects at Hilton Special school, Blind School in Vatuwaqa and also the one in Namadi Heights and also Saint Christopher’s Home in Naulu.”

In Fiji, the celebration is commemorated today because on this day in 1944, Corporal Sefanaia Sukanaivalu made the ultimate sacrifice by laying down his life for his comrades.

This year’s celebration commemorates the act of heroism by Victoria Cross recipient Corporal Sukanaivalu during the World War 2 in the Solomon Island.

The RFMF continues the celebrations with the Infantry Unit skills competition in Nabua before celebrating Lieutenant Isake Katonibau’s and the World Seven Series Trophy at 2pm today.
