Man sentenced to 13-years for raping niece

A fifty-year-old man has been sentenced to thirteen years imprisonment for raping his niece.

The Lautoka High Court heard the incident occurred between July and December 2010.

The victim who was a high school student and was to turn eighteen in December, 2010 lived in the same settlement with her parents and three siblings as the man.

The Court heard the man who was the first cousin of the victim’s father arranged for her to do chores at his home after school, in the weekends and during school holidays.

In return, he promised to compensate her with school bus fares.

The Court heard that during this time the man forced his niece to have sexual intercourse with him and threatened her not to tell anyone or he will kill her.

The victim did not report the matter until May 2011 when a neighbor prodded out of her whether she was pregnant.

Her family them came to know about the matter before reporting the matter police.

The man admitted in Court that he had intercourse with her and was responsible for her pregnancy.

He has a non-parole sentence of ten years.
