Man jailed for raping a minor

A 23-year-old student of a Technical College in Fiji has been sentenced to ten years imprisonment, after he was convicted of two counts of rape, involving a minor under the age of 13 years.

He will be eligible for parole after serving an imprisonment term of 7-years.

The court heard on the 29th of April, 2015 in the Western Division the accused committed the offence, when he was 19-years-old and the victim was only four years old at that time.

He was staying at the victim’s house when the incident occurred inside the toilet, while the girl’s mother was washing clothes.

Lautoka High Court Judge, Justice Aruna Aluthge highlighted the aggravating factor in the case is that the victim is the rapist’s step cousin.

The Judge highlighted the victim suffered pain and injuries, according to the Impact Statement, as well as suffering the emotional psychological trauma of the incident.
