Man cops jail term for rape

A fourty-two-year-old man has been sentenced to twelve-years-ten-months and two weeks after being convicted of rape and indecent assault.

The Lautoka High Court heard the incident happened in August 2010.

The Court heard the complainant who was seven-years-old at that time was at home with her one-year-old brother.

At around 8.30am when the complainant was carrying her brother, the man who was the next door neighbour came into the house, got hold of the victim’s brother and put him on the floor.

He then carried the victim to the sofa and indecently assaulted and raped her.

The girl told her mother about the incident the next morning and the matter was reported to police.

He has a non-parole sentence of ten years.

A 42-year-old cane harvester has been jailed for 9 years 11 months for raping a Class 6 student.

The man had pleaded guilty to one count of rape at the Lautoka High Court.

The Court heard the incident happened sometimes from 22nd May to 28th May, 2011.

The victim who lives in the same village with the accused was returning home from school when she was raped.

The Court heard the accused had warned the victim not to tell anyone about the incident.

However upon inquiry last year, she told her parents.

It was then reported to police.

The medical examination of the victim revealed she was raped.

Judge Sudharshana De Silva in sentencing the man said he breached the trust of the victim, which caused her emotional suffering.

He will be allowed for parole after 8 years.
