Labasa farmers prepare for new harvesting season

Labasa cane farmers are preparing for the new harvesting season with the Labasa Sugar Mill expected to be the first to open for crushing this season.

With four full weeks left before crushing starts, farmers have been meeting to discuss the harvesting and crushing season.

Vunivau Cane farmer Brij Deo says they met last Sunday to discuss pending issues.

He says they are preparing their harvesting gangs and making the necessary preparation as well with regard to their tractors and lorries.

FSC CEO Graham Clark says they are happy with the progress so far.

“The preparations are well Farmers are organising their harvesting gangs. Everyone is getting ready for the harvest to commence. We still got a bit of work to do in the next month. We are satisfied as well with the progress on the harvesting and transport side and I think the mill will be ready on time as well.”

Crushing at the Labasa Sugar Mill starts on the 19th of June.
