The Employment Ministry will this year focus more on inspections to ensure that every employer adheres to labor laws.

Minister responsible, Jone Usamate says they’re officers will also ensure that employers are well versed with these laws.

He says in the past when employers did something illegal then the ministry was later informed that they did not know it was part of the law.

The minister believes that the more inspections conducted, the less complaints they will get.

” Sometimes you know employers are not complying to the law because they don’t know what the law says so that requires us to strengthen the number of inspections and we have target for the number of inspections that our labor officers will do, that our OHS staff will do to go and inspect workplaces and tell them what needs to be fixed.”

The ministry says if workers are not being paid overtime, maternity leave or annual leave then complaints will be dealt with, through the mediation process.
