Social Democratic Liberal Party leader Ro Teimumu Kepa has changed her tune, overnight.

Speaking on CFL’s radio show Straight talk with Vijay Narayan, Kepa sticks with her guns on two very controversial issues, equal citizenry and common identity, and she says the name “Fijian” belongs to the indigenous people and that’s how it will be, and there is no need for a referendum.

“Vijay: Will you go for a referendum and find out for the people, if you form the next government and decide on a common name after that? "

“Kepa: Right now that name belongs to the indigenous Fijians and that name has been there from time immemorial. We have a book about Fiji and the Fijians, which was written by the early missionaries in 1859, and even then the name Fiji and the Fijians was used widely for the indigenous group before any other group of people arrived here, so that, that name we know belongs to the indigenous people. No one can just come and create a constitution and say under the decrees that everybody else should be called by this name.”

This is in contradiction of what Kepa said on Sunday night, live on FBC TV’s 4 the record program.

She said if in parliament, her government will consult, and there should have been proper consultation.

“If there were proper consultations, we would look at it, there would have been something’s that we would been, and other things we would have not agreed to.”

_"Kepa: if there were proper consultations, i cannot answer very simply, like you want me to do, and it has to go through proper Fijian forum."

In the 2013 Constitution, every Fiji Citizen is called a Fijian, but SODELPA refuses to accept this.

SODELPA says as indigenous people the i-taukei should have special privileges claiming they were the first to arrive in Fiji and that no one can be equal to them, and the name Fijian should be reserved for the indigenous.

Meanwhile The National Federation Party Leader Biman Prasad,People’s Democratic Party’s Felix Anthony and Labour Party’s Mahendra Chaudhry has condemned comments made by the Social Democratic Liberal Party leader Ro Teimumu Kepa and Lasenia Qarase about the i-taukei being more equal than others in Fiji.
