The Indian High Commission in Suva is celebrating India’s 68th Independence Day today.

Acting High Commissioner Vikrant Rattan says they are happy to mark this day with the same excitement despite being far away from India.

Rattan says Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will deliver his first speech from Red Forte in Delhi.

“The flag will be hoisted by him (Narendra Modi), that is a traditional thing that we have been doing form the very beginning, so I am sure he will be doing this and after that there will be an encouraging speech of his which would again give the area that his government would want to tackle in the coming days and months."

The Commission marked the day by hoisting India’s flag, singing national anthem and delivering the speech made by Indian President on the eve of Independence.

India observes Independence Day on the 15th August, which is a National Holiday commemorating the nation’s independence from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in 1947.
