The Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission has welcomed the procedures set out in section 57 of the Electoral Act pertaining to voting by persons with disabilities.

Chair, Ashwin Raj says these amendments are in consonance with the principles of non-discrimination prescribed in the Fijian Constitution as well as the Rights of Persons Living with Disabilities Act.

This is also stipulated in the Article 29 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which Fiji has now ratified.

Raj says these amendments have created the conditions of possibility for persons with disabilities to select a person of their choice who is a registered voter to assist them to mark their ballot inside the polling station on Election Day and for Pre-Polls.

The Commission is encouraging all persons with disabilities who are eligible to vote to fully participate and materialise their right to political participation.
