High chance of depression to develop into Tropical Cyclone

Senior weather forecaster Misaele Funaki says the possibility of Tropical Depression 02F developing into a Tropical cyclone in the next 12 to 24 hours is high.

Funaki says TD 02F is currently located 610 kilometers North off Nadi and is slowly developing within the vicinity of Rotuma.

The Meteorology Office has issued a strong wind warning for land areas of Eastern half of Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Lau, Lomaiviti, Yasawa and Mamanuca Group, Taveuni and the nearby smaller islands.

A heavy rain alert has also been issued for these areas.

“This is with anticipation that with TD 02F slips to south and eventually to the west of us the rain band that we are currently experiencing is expected to affect the rest of the group as well. Data that are currently coming in indicates that we’ve been getting good rainfall and backed up by our radar images we showing that the rain is currently affecting Vanua Levu and we also got a call from Rakiraki that they are also getting the rain.”

Fiji is just two week away from the official start of the tropical cyclone season.
