The Health Ministry has stood its ground by not implementing a Public Health Emergency in the Western division.
FBC News reported this morning that there are now 17 cases of typhoid, 28 confirmed cases of dengue fever and 17 cases of leptospirosis from 36 different villages in the West.
This confirmation from Commissioner Western Commander Joeli Cawaki prompted a meeting within the Health Ministry today to decide whether to implement the emergency.
Ministry spokesperson Peni Namotu says they have decided to maintain their stand after carefully considering the situation in the West.
“The confirmed number of typhoid, lepstopirasis and dengue fever cases has not reached the alarming rate for the Ministry to declare Public Health Emergency. Secondly there has been improvement in the sanitation and environment in the affected are in the Western Division.”
He says the Ministry has also considered the financial and business implications especially in the field of tourism if the emergency regulations are put in place.
