The Fiji Sugar Corporation’s cogeneration project at Rarawai Mill in Ba worth an estimated FD$200 million will begin this year.

FSC Executive Chairman Abdul Khan says work has progressed on the ground and expects construction to begin by the middle of this year.

“The Exim Bank of India has given us a US$70 million facility the rest of the money will come from onshore. We just going to work on requirements for government guarantee for some of this lending but work has progressed to quite a level for example a lot of ground work has been done on site with all the testing the detailed drawings being carried out at the moment and we ready to go out for expressions of interest in India.”

The co-generation facility that will be built at Rarawai Mill will utilize bagasse, a sugar by product as fuel.

Another project lined up is for a refinery at its Labasa Mill which is around FD$20 million and a packaging plant expected to come online by June.

These projects are expected to help generate more revenue for the sugar industry.
