FRA works on improving seals on roads

January 25, 2018 5:28 pm

The Fiji Roads Authority is working on improving the current seals used on the roads with an on-going trial of the Otis Seal and Fibre Seal.

FRA’s CEO Jonathan Moore says it’s the first time these types of seals are being used and it’s because the Authority want to improve the life of roads in addition to limiting the maintenance required.

“What we’re looking at now is fibre layers and sheets to go in there too to enhance the finish and durability. I think from our point of view and our major issue and concern is durability. Nothing irritates the public and us then having to go in after 2 or 3 years and having to do a resurface cause it’s being degraded, so we’re looking at, our major emphasis now is durability.”

Moore says while the cost-benefit analysis of the new seal has been positive, the true test will be at least after of year of use in traffic.

He adds while it is more expensive than the basic seal that has been used in the past, it will be a money saver in the future if the roads hold up longer than their current lifespans.
