May 10, 2016 1:23 am

A former police officer has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for raping a junior officer.

The inspector had been sent to Taveuni as the Officer in Charge in 2013 to regularise operations after numerous complaints against the Island police and their services.

However the court found that under his control, the senior officer added a further dimension to the problems in Taveuni –a climate of sexual harassment.

Three junior policewomen gave evidence of his authoritarian and oppressive management style.

He told one married woman police constable to have an affair with him before subsequently raping her.

The inspector has also been found guilty of 3 counts of indecently annoying a person for pestering 2 other female officers with obscene and suggestive phone calls.

He must serve a minimum of 10 years before parole.
